On the 26th and 27th of April my family (Hollingtons) opened up our garden for the public to visit, which we did so in order to raise money for the School’s Buddy Up and Sony Camp programs. This event was partnered with Young House where 12 students and their families volunteered. Our Garden was open from 10am – 4.30pm both days and the weather was excellent. This resulted in almost 1000 people attending the event, raising a total of $6,200.
The lead up to this event involved rigorous preparation with my family all spending multiple hours each day taking care of the garden. Some of these activities included cleaning, watering, weeding. The Young House boys helped set up all the tables, the café, and the marquees, and their roles on the day included taking entrance fees and running the café.
The event ran very successfully, largely thanks to the help of the boys. The feedback we received from the public was extremely positive. One of the major challenges we faced throughout the preparation for this event was the weather. Adelaide has had the dryest start to a year in 170 years of weather recording, it was a major struggle to keep many plants healthy and ready for the event. Another challenge we faced was ensuring that everything was organised and ready, as there were many different things that were required in order for this event to be a success.
I personally really enjoyed the event, as we got to meet a vast variety of people, help them out, and do all of this while raising money for a good cause. The feedback from the other boys was similar, and the experience was very beneficial for all.
