In Term 2, St Peter’s College will be piloting a series of parent and student workshops around different aspects of technology use at home with a focus on supporting parents to guide students to make positive and informed choices around their use of technology. The first three parent workshops have been scheduled as follows.
Workshop 1: Screen Time controls for iPad and iPhone (Junior School)
Tuesday 27 April, 7:30 am – 8:30 am
This workshop will walk parents through setting up customised Screen Time controls on devices. Screen Time controls are designed to support parents with managing device usage in the home, such as limiting access to different types of content, seeing real-time reports on how devices are being used and setting time limits on different categories of apps. Parents will be able to set up Screen Time controls on iPads and iPhones that their children have access to and will be supported in ensuring that these restrictions do not affect the use of the device at School.
For this workshop, please bring along any iPads and iPhones that you want to set up with restrictions; you can leave school devices behind at the end of the session and they will be delivered to your son in class for the start of the day.
Workshop 2: Family Technology Agreements (Junior School)
Thursday 29 April, 6:00 pm -7:00 pm
Family technology agreements are an excellent way to start conversations about positive behaviours with technology and are written to support your own style and approach to parenting. This workshop is open to St Peter’s College Junior School families; all children, including those attending other schools, are welcome to attend with their parents. The workshop will walk families through discussing and designing their own technology agreement that covers family rules and more personalised boundaries for individual family members and will allow families to draw on the user agreements that are in place in the Junior School.
Some of the areas covered in this workshop will be:
- How can we find a healthy balance with technology?
- Where and when can each family member use devices?
- How can each family member stay safe?
- How will we deal with problems with technology?
A range of agreement templates will be provided, or you are welcome to create your own on the day.
Workshop 3: Family Technology Agreements (Senior School) Thursday 6 May, 6:30 pm -7:30 pm
Family technology agreements are an excellent way to negotiate and set agreed boundaries around the use of technology and, importantly for older children, allow them a voice and degree of independence whilst ensuring that they stay safe. This workshop is open to St Peter’s College Senior School families; students, including older children from other schools, are encouraged to attend with their parents as partnership and open dialogue at this age is key to success. The workshop will walk families through discussing and agreeing on their own sets of boundaries that work for them as a family. Some of the areas covered in this workshop will include:
- Use of technology for leisure
- Mobile phone use
- Social media and other online communication
- How the family will deal with problems with technology
A range of agreement templates will be provided, or you are welcome to create your own on the day.
