Recently, our Prep gardeners walked to the Adelaide Botanic Gardens to visit the Little Sprouts Kitchen Garden. We had the wonderful opportunity to wonder, explore and discover the variety of fruits, vegetables and herbs growing throughout the garden.
The boys embraced the opportunity to get their hands dirty as they held wriggly worms, planted seeds and harvested a range of vegetables to bring back to our classroom. They delighted in tasting snow peas, mustard seeds, oranges and even freshly picked spinach! As we explored the gardens, the boys began noticing the many places where birds, insects and other creatures might live. This led to thoughtful conversations about why the Botanic Gardens are such an enticing place for living creatures. We began to wonder, “How could our school also become a ‘good place’ for creatures to live?”
Our visit has sparked some exciting ideas back at school. The boys are already beginning to plan how we might entice more bug and bird life into our school environment. Plans are taking shape for bug hotels and birdhouses, seeds have been planted to create our own vegetable patch and we are beginning to explore the important role worms play in our ecosystem. It was a wonderful opportunity for the boys to connect with nature and deepen their appreciation of the important role gardens play in supporting living things.
