In 2025 she will step into the role of Head Coach of the 1st VIII.

Here, Lucy shares her thoughts on rowing, coaching and what inspires her.

What got you into coaching?
I’ve always loved working with people and being around others who share the same passion. I found rowing when I was 16, and with it a group of people who accepted me for who I was. That experience made such a difference to me, and now I want to create an environment where athletes feel the same. Where they can be themselves while chasing whatever goals they set their mind to.

What keeps you coaching?
Rowing gave me a real sense of belonging when I was younger. I know what it feels like to be part of a crew that achieves something special together, and I want to help athletes experience that too. For me, it’s about showing them that they’re stronger together and helping them feel like they truly belong.

What’s been your most enjoyable coaching experience?
It’s watching athletes grow, both in their rowing and as people. Seeing their confidence build, not just in the boat but in themselves, is really rewarding.

How would you like to be remembered by your athletes?
Like a good soft centred chocolate bar – tough on the outside but soft on the inside! I’d like them to remember that I pushed them to be the best rower they could be and the best person. And even when I was tough, I hope they always felt I was approachable, supportive, and cared about them.
