SPSC rowing Season Opener
22 October 2022
Torrens Boatshed
If any doubts lingered about Father Theo’s prayers they were dispelled on Saturday as the weather forecasters were confounded and the sun broke through for Rowing’s season opener.
The Rowing Parents’ Committee and volunteers set up and catered for just under 250, with mobile BBQs and our coffee/BBQ trailer. Many thanks to the Bagot, Gordon and Scalzi families. All their work created a great atmosphere to launch the new season. Barnaby Eaton, Director of Sport & HPE opened proceedings and introduced the Headmaster Tim Browning. The Club was proud to acknowledge three mothers who have tirelessly supported Rowing at the School over many seasons especially through COVID; Penny Connel, Karen Nesbitt and Sarah Howard. Penny, Karen and Sarah had the honour of unveiling the Club’s three new boats; St Mathias, St Mary Madgalene and Frederick Halcomb. Before blessing the boats, Father Theo explained that St Mathias was the only apostle we were missing from our small boat fleet and St Mary Madgalene was the apostle to the apostles and are now senior squad pairs. The new Year 9 quad is named after the late Frederick Halcomb (FLL 1927) who coached the first St Peter’s College winning crew.
Spectators were entertained by racing between two mixed year quads who took on the might of a parents’ VIII:
Mixed Year Quad: Ryan Fowler (cox), Thomas Whiteman, George Quigley, Ethan Cross and Murphy Eaton
Mixed Year Quad: Harry Binns (cox), Thomas Browning, Archie Young, Nathan Dorogi, Hugo Maslen
Parents’ VIII: Philippe Scalzi (cox), Nick Bagot, David Myers, Matthew Brook, Brad Maslen, Anthea Cross, Fred Howard, Anna Seppelt, Garth Gauvin
