On Friday 20 March, ten students, comprising both first language and background Chinese speakers, participated in the 4th SA OZCHIN Quiz Bowl, a competition organised by the Chinese Language Teachers’ Association of South Australia. The event provided a valuable platform for students to demonstrate their proficiency in Chinese language and literature, as well as their understanding of Chinese culture.
The competition brought together students from five other schools across the state, including both first language and background Chinese learners, fostering a diverse and highly competitive environment. The event commenced with a series of questions focused on Chinese language, including grammar and literature, during which students demonstrated a high level of knowledge and commitment. This was followed by an interactive Kahoot quiz centred on Chinese culture, where students collaborated in teams to respond to questions relating to traditions, history, and cultural practices.
Congratulations to Max Wu (Year 9 FRR) on achieving an outstanding result, placing second in the Junior Background Language Speaker category. Furthermore, our student team—Matthew Wong (Year 12 S&A), Alex Pang (Year 11 S&A), and Lucas Ye (Year 11 S&A)—performed exceptionally well, securing second place in the team competition.
The competition proved to be an enriching experience for all participants. Students embraced the opportunity to challenge themselves, engage with peers from other schools, and further develop their appreciation of the Chinese language and culture. The event not only strengthened students’ linguistic and cultural competencies but also encouraged them to reflect upon and recognise their own cultural identity. Special thanks are extended to Mr Lamont and Mr Green for their support in organising transportation for boarders, thereby enabling their participation in this valuable experience.
