The UN Food and Agriculture Organization predicts that by 2050, 90% of the world’s topsoil may be degraded. A lack of organic content turns soil into sand.

Inspired by the Save Soil movement and concerned about the crisis of soil degradation, Sahil Jha launched a solo cycling campaign to raise awareness. In 2022, at just 16 years of age, he cycled 15,000 km to share his message. In March 2025, Sahil began a new journey – 20,000 km across 20 countries in 15 months, starting in Bundaberg, QLD.

This week, Sahil cycled into SPSC to the warm welcome and cheers of our Years 4 and 5 students. He spoke about soil health and the ways this global issue can be improved. Students were also intrigued to learn about the physical and logistical challenges of his journey. Their newfound knowledge will now spark further research and discovery in class, linking to their environmental and sustainability studies.

We wish Sahil safe travels as he heads to Western Australia and then on to Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Europe and finally the United States. Through both of his journeys, Sahil provides a valuable example of advocacy and passion for our students.
