The School Sport SA State Cross Country Carnival, held at Oakbank on Thursday 4 June 2026, once again proved why it is one of the most anticipated events on the winter sporting calendar. As part of the broader State Championships, the carnival brings together athletes from across South Australia, offering runners of all ages and abilities the chance to test themselves on one of the most challenging and iconic cross country courses in the state.
This year, Oakbank delivered everything it is famous for, and more. Heavy rain in the days leading up to the event transformed the track into a muddy, energy‑sapping test of endurance. On the day itself, athletes and spectators experienced what felt like four seasons in a single morning. Warm sunshine quickly gave way to icy winds, followed by bursts of driving rain, before clearing again just long enough to offer a moment of relief. It was classic Oakbank: unpredictable, demanding and unforgettable.
Despite the conditions, our students approached the challenge with determination and pride, representing both our School and the North Adelaide District with outstanding spirit.
10 Year Olds – A Strong First Showing
For our 10 year old athletes, this was their first taste of the legendary Oakbank course. The 2km race pushed them physically and mentally, yet Isaac Sims, Henry Sims and Oliver Paradowski rose to the occasion with impressive resilience. Their efforts were a testament to their preparation and courage, especially given the slippery hills and thick mud that made every step a challenge. A special congratulations goes to Isaac, whose exceptional 6th place performance earned him selection for the national championships in Sydney this September; an extraordinary achievement for a first time competitor.
11 Year Olds – Powering Through the 3km
The 11 year old runners faced a demanding 3km course, and Abraham Tembel, Sean Cheng and Max Paradowksi tackled it with grit and focus. Among many strong performances, Abraham delivered a standout run, finishing 5th out of more than 180 competitors. His top five placing secured him a well‑deserved spot at the national championships, highlighting both his talent and his determination in tough conditions.
12 Year Old Boys – A Podium Finish
In the 12 year old boys’ 3km race, Douglas Cundy, James Le, Henry Bendyk and James Knights demonstrated teamwork and perseverance, navigating the muddiest parts of the course with impressive composure. Their combined efforts earned their North Adelaide District Team a 3rd‑place team medal, a fantastic result that reflects both their commitment and their ability to perform under pressure.
While the weather was wild and the course unforgiving, the day was filled with moments of courage, camaraderie and celebration. Every student who lined up at the start demonstrated resilience, pride, and sportsmanship; qualities that matter just as much as finishing times or medals.
Oakbank 2026 will be remembered not only for its challenging conditions but for the determination shown by every runner who took them on. Well done to all our athletes for representing our School and the North Adelaide SAPSASA District with such heart and enthusiasm.
