08 September 2021
The St Peter’s College Athletics season is again upon us. The 2021 Athletics Trials commenced on Tuesday of Week 6 and will concluded Thursday of Week 8. Over three consecutive weeks, students from all ten Houses across the Senior School have earnt points for their Houses through participation at Athletics Trials held both at lunch time and after school. Now that trials have been completed, the Athletics Carnival events begin in Week 9 with the 800 and 1500 metre events being held on the Main Oval during lunchtimes. Senior School students have an opportunity to support members of their House as they compete in Championship events, for the ten fastest in each age group, and Division 1 and 2 House events. The House events provide an opportunity for boys who performed well within their House group at trials to earn valuable points towards the House Athletics Cups.
In addition to trials, the prestigious Saints Athletics Club have again run their coaching sessions on Saturday mornings in Weeks 6, 7 and 8 in preparation for the Athletics Carnival on Friday of Week 9. The coaching is offered by national class coaches and athletes, many of whom are old scholars. All students are strongly encouraged to attend, in particular those aspiring to be part of the prestigious Achilles Cup team.
As the Captain of Athletics, I would like to extend a warm welcome to the wider School community to the St Peter’s College 2021 Athletics Carnival. Click here to view the 2021 Athletics Carnival program. The day brings a carnival like atmosphere and food and beverages will be available on site. Boys will be competing in championship, House division and novelty events as well as relays at the commencement and closing of the day. The best five events will be used to determine the champion and runner up at each age group, which will be presented at the conclusion of the day’s events. Finally, the House trophies will be announced with the Junior House Cup awarded to the best Under 13/Under 14/Under 15 House, the Senior House Cup to the best Under 16/Under 17/Open House and the best overall House will receive the Champion Athletic House Trophy for 2021.
Following the carnival, the first and second placed athletes in each championship event will be considered for selection in the Achilles Cup Team. This is St Peter’s largest intercollegiate team, made up of over 70 of our most talented athletes. St Peter’s College has dominated this competition over the past 50 years, losing only once, and we hope to maintain our position as the best athletic school in SA.
