As a component of the Semester 2, Year 8 English curriculum, students were required to compose a poem that focused on a modern day issue that is of concern to them. These issues included: the war in Gaza, masculinity, the workload of a high school student and many more. The poems were to include an array of poetic devices that had been taught to them in class. Students then performed their poems for assessment, adhering to the conventions of a ‘Poetry Slam’, to their individual classes. This task invited students to express themselves creatively and compete for a spot in the final.

On Wednesday 4 September, all Year 8 students and teachers were invited to witness the best of the slam poets, as they took to the stage for the grand finale of our Poetry Slam competition.

The students are to be commended for their confidence, delivery and consideration for the topic they wished to be discussed. Their performances were of a high calibre.

Congratulations to Abiel, Navir, Nizam, Andrew, Austen and Eddie for their inspiring showcase of spoken word. Andrew emerged as the winner with is compelling poem on the power of debating.
