50 SPSC students volunteered with The Smith Family’s ‘Student2Student’ reading program this year. Student2Student supports disadvantaged young Australians in Years 3 to 8 who struggle with literacy. The program matches these young people with a peer Buddy who helps to encourage and guide them as they read together to build their confidence and skills. They read together twice a week for 18 weeks using an online program.

Here are some reflections from student Buddy volunteers:

“I really enjoyed my reading sessions with Harley; he was a great learner and a lot of fun to read with. We explored many different books and moved up over 6 levels in the little time that we had. The biggest challenge was when Harley pulled out of the program because we were making really good progress and it was hard to hear him go. I hope he keeps working on his reading because he has lots of great potential. For the time I was involved I loved the program and can’t wait to start again next year.”
Joel Caroscio, Year 8 Farrell House

“I would recommend this to others because the experience is so memorable and meaningful, being able to support another student and watch their progress grow.”
Jerry Liu, Year 10 Short House

“I really enjoyed helping my buddy learn to read fluently and progress significantly in his reading skills, and it has been an absolute privilege to be able to participate in this program.”
Nicholas Steele Year 7, Da Costa House

“The most surprising thing I learnt was how challenging reading can be for some, and what I saw first-hand, was the joy my buddy felt once he read something difficult, which was really good to see.”
Mahir Goyal, Year 9 Farrell House

“I would recommend this to others because it’s rewarding to make a difference and you learn valuable skills along the way.”
Will Harper, Year 9 MacDermott House

“I really enjoyed being able to take part in this Student2Student reading help. I have surprised my self by the fact of how genuinely inspiring it is for me to help a 9 year old kid to be able to improve his reading so much just through my help. I would totally and completely recommend this to anyone and it is a extremely meaningful activity to take part in”.
Charlie Baker, Year 9 Hawkes House

“Reading with my buddy over the last few months has not only been an enjoyable experience, but a rewarding one as well.”
Andrew Lucas, Year 9 Howard House

“I really enjoyed reading with someone who was enthusiastic and passionate about reading and being able to successfully guide them through their journey, so they feel more confident in their reading abilities.”
Adi Baghel, Year 10 Farrell House
