Throughout Term 1, students and staff from the Boarding House have been working in the Junior School to clean and repair the Reception students’ chicken coop.

The boys started by clearing the existing mess in the coop before filling the entire area with shell grit and creating a path through the pen for safe access. A key part of the refurbishment was ensuring the coop was future proofed against cunning foxes! The coop now contains mulch and plant material to promote daily activities for the chickens to utilise and a garden as an additional healthy food source. Finally, the chooks were ready to settle into their new home.

I would like to acknowledge and thank the efforts of Mr Rob Green and Dan Rasheed (Year 10) in particular whose weekly commitment to the project this year has been exceedingly beneficial in the success of the project. According to Dan, the opportunity to provide younger boys with the experience of working with farm animals and learning from them has been an incredibly fulfilling experience, as this can often be overlooked and taken for granted.
