Each year at St Peter’s College, our Tongue Twister Competition has become a much anticipated tradition, proudly celebrating International Modern Language Day and the rich linguistic diversity within our community.
During the week of International Modern Language Day, every Languages class runs its own internal tongue twister competition in the language students are studying. From Spanish and French to Chinese and beyond, classrooms are filled with energy as students practise speed, clarity and accurate pronunciation. Our Global Languages and Cultures students also take part, presenting a tongue twister in the Kaurna language, honouring the language of the traditional custodians of the Adelaide Plains and recognising the importance of Indigenous languages in Australia.
Each class winner progresses to the Grand Final, which this year took place in Week 5 on Friday at lunchtime. The atmosphere was vibrant and supportive, with students gathering to cheer on their peers. Impressive performances were on display, as finalists demonstrated not only remarkable speed but also precise articulation and confident fluency.
It was inspiring to witness the dedication and courage required to perform in another language before an audience.
Prizes, including chocolates and lollies, were awarded to our winners, and snacks were shared with the audience, adding to the celebratory spirit. Above all, the event was a wonderful moment of connection and collective pride, as we were reminded of the impressive pronunciation skills and linguistic growth of our students.
The Tongue Twister Competition will continue to be a valued tradition at the School, and we look forward to announcing this year’s winners in an upcoming Muster.
