Read about other students’ experience volunteering with ‘Student 2 Student’ below:

“Last year, I read with a young boy called Romeo. When we began reading, he was very shy and didn’t talk much, and for the first couple of sessions, I was just speaking to his mum; however, over time, he came to love reading, and by the end of the program, he had improved so much, reading much higher and more advanced book levels. The students you help to read are far less privileged than we are, and even just to see them improve and enjoy reading is a single reason to sign up to help.”

“I surprised myself by realising I could be a positive role model and step into a leadership role naturally. In year 7, I was partnered with Year 3 boy Alex, who has dyslexia and struggled with reading and learning. I was able to help him tremendously and through our reading he gained 8 reading levels.  This left a good feeling and allowed me to foster a relationship with my buddy but also see him improve significantly.  I was hesitant to join at first, but I am glad I took the opportunity because it has been incredibly rewarding.”

“I really enjoyed my weekly reading sessions with my buddy. They were a great way to relax my mind, and I found it really engaging. I would recommend this to all students because it is a great way to give back to the community. You don’t have to do much but for my buddy I could tell it was making a huge difference. It’s really easy in the comfort of your own home and overall, it’s just an extremely positive experience.”
