When you leave school, what do you want to be remembered for?

I personally want to be remembered for my service and commitment to others.

As a junior student, I had many senior role models who made a positive impact on my schooling. These role models would regularly spend time checking-in to see how I was going, encouraging me, sharing their experiences and – most importantly – being my friend. All things that are not very hard but do take a conscious effort and commitment.

Last year, I realised that I wanted to be that same special role model in someone else’s life. So, I emailed Mr Turner (the Head of Music) and volunteered in assisting the Year 4-5 Prep Band.

Every Thursday morning before school, I played with them, gave advice and had fun. I soon built a strong connection with the cohort, making friends and feeling like I belonged. We bonded over a shared goal to play well and laughter when we didn’t. I had the privilege to watch them grow and succeed over the year.

This commitment isn’t just service hours on a page. It’s doing my part in Saints’ culture of service and support which the School is known for. It is what makes our School great, but we all need to do our bit to achieve that.

I implore students to start your service hours early, before workloads increase. Choose something you enjoy and do a little bit each week.

Not just because it’s a school requirement, but because you might discover a passion for making a positive impact in others’ lives, just as those before you made a positive impact on you.

In the wise words of Maya Angelou, “at the end of the day, people won’t remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel.”
