If you pick up a dictionary, you will see that service is ‘the action of helping or doing work for someone’, however, I don’t believe this holistically covers what service means, or what it at least means to me. Service isn’t about what you do, but how what you do makes people feel better. There are thousands of different service opportunities, and all of which help people in different ways. Service happens both inside and out of the SPSC community.

Recently, service can be seen in the School by students volunteering at the SALA Art Exhibition hosted at SPSC; enriching the school community and helping the participating artists, such as Jimmy Dodd.

Service is operating without expecting a reward in return, or even being present to see the impact. In my life, I chose to do my service by planning the 2024 Intercol BBQ. After seeing the conflict in the Middle East, I felt that we as a community could do more to help. So, I took to planning the event. I started by drafting up the idea, and scheduling a meeting with Mr Eaton. Once we got the ‘OK’, I started calculating how much we would need to order, working through the costs. I couldn’t have done it alone, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of staff members and other boys. Thankfully, the event was a huge success, as everything sold out. And while I won’t directly see the impact of the money raised, being in Australia, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t serve the community.

The upcoming SONY Camp is another example of service. I along with 15 other boys recently were able to meet both our Wilderness partners, along with our buddies (our guests) and their families. After meeting our buddies, the students are both excited and confident that we will be able to make SONY Camp an amazing experience for them.

In summary, we do service as it improves the lives of others and allows us to give back and express our gratitude.
