The Year 10 Agriculture class spent a day learning about viticulture (growing grapes) and oenology (wine making). This workshop also showcased career opportunities in the Grape and Wine industry. Students gained an insight into the world of working with vines, grapes and wine.
They also learnt about how science and research is driving innovation and sustainability in the sector. Students participated in hands-on learning experiences in the vineyards and wine research laboratories and undertook activities, experiments and experiences which explored lab safety, quality, production and marketing.
The program was delivered at the Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI) facility, and the vineyards at the University of Adelaide’s Waite Campus. The program linked to components of the Australian Curriculum Learning Objectives ‘Science as a Human Endeavour’, and links to the Viticulture, Wine Making and Advanced Wine Making Curriculum. This initiative was part of the “More Great Less Whine” project that was funded by the Australian Government and supported by The Australian Wine Research Institute, The University of Adelaide, Wine Australia, and The South Australian Science Teachers Association.
Thank you to Belinda Cay at AgCommunicators for organising the event and South Australia’s Lead Agriculture Teacher Sue Pratt for hosting our class.
