In late 2025, Year 9 Design students undertook an exciting real-world project under the guidance of Ms Skewes. Tasked with designing the official poster for the SPSC 2026 Alfresco Concert, students were challenged to respond to a professional-style brief provided by the Music Faculty.
The brief outlined specific constraints, including mandatory text, audience considerations, and production requirements, requiring students to balance creativity with clear communication. This authentic design process invited boys to think beyond the classroom, considering client needs, target audience and visual impact.
Through research, idea development, digital refinement, and critique, students explored how typography, colour, composition, and imagery work together to shape meaning. We are delighted to announce that the winning design, selected by Music staff, was created by Benjamin Wang (now in Year 10). Benjamin’s poster stood out for its confident use of a vibrant orange palette, immediately capturing attention while evoking the warmth and energy of an outdoor autumn concert.
His design demonstrates a strong understanding of visual hierarchy, guiding the viewer’s eye seamlessly from headline to key details. Thoughtful use of scale and contrast establishes clarity, while carefully balanced elements create harmony across the composition. The poster also conveys a dynamic sense of rhythm and movement – qualities that reflect the spirit of live performance.
Through repetition and directional flow, Benjamin’s design captures both sound and atmosphere in a visually compelling way. Importantly, it meets the functional requirements of the brief while maintaining a distinctive aesthetic voice. Projects such as this highlight the value of real-world learning in the Arts. By responding to an authentic client brief, students develop not only technical skills but also problem-solving, adaptability, and creative confidence. We warmly congratulate Benjamin on this outstanding achievement and look forward to seeing his design showcased as part of the 2026 Alfresco Concert promotion.
We wish him every success as he continues to grow and flourish in Design.
