There is something unmistakably special about St Peter’s College during Intercol week.
The energy builds across the grounds and sidelines. Boys turn out in numbers to get behind their mates, our musicians add enormously to the atmosphere, families and old scholars return, and there is a genuine sense of pride in representing and supporting the blue and white. It is one of those occasions when the strength and spirit of our community is particularly visible.
This year’s Winter Intercol was another wonderful example. Across the week, from our Junior teams through to our Seniors, SPSC won just shy of 70 per cent of all fixtures. It was an outstanding result and, importantly, one that reflected the contribution of boys right across our sporting program – not simply those representing our First teams.
There were memorable victories, close contests and, inevitably, results that did not go our way. That is sport.
In the lead-up to the week, I challenged our boys to consider whether they had genuinely done enough. Had they prepared well? Turned up when it was difficult? Done the work required to give themselves and their team the best chance of succeeding?
Those questions matter because sport provides an important learning environment for our boys. It asks them to perform without certainty, respond when things do not go their way, persist when improvement is not immediate, and take risks knowing they may fail. In doing so, they develop qualities such as courage, resilience, discipline, humility and teamwork.
Intercol seems to amplify all of this.
Throughout the week, our boys competed with an intensity and determination that was wonderful to watch. They chased hard, supported one another and found something extra when contests became difficult. Equally important was the way they conducted themselves beyond the arena – showing respect for their opposition and officials, humility in victory and grace in defeat.
Perhaps that also leaves us with an important challenge: how do we bring that same intensity, pride and investment every time we represent St Peter’s College? If Intercol shows us what we are capable of, the opportunity is to make that our standard every week.
Intercol is an enormous collective effort. My sincere thanks to our coaches, coordinators and staff who give so generously of their time, and to the many people working behind the scenes to make the week possible. In particular, our Grounds team did an outstanding job preparing and presenting our facilities across a demanding week of fixtures and weather. Thank you also to our families, supporters and wider School community for the energy and spirit they brought to the week.
Congratulations to every boy who represented SPSC throughout Winter Intercol and the broader winter sport season.
