On Friday 6 March the Year 10 Criminology class visited the Adelaide Magistrates Court. The students have opened the first part of the course trying to work out why people commit crimes, before we move into how police solve and investigate crime. The students got to witness a few cases of theft, drug possession and driving offences, as offenders faced the Magistrate.
The experience is very different to what boys expect court to look like, with cases being handled quickly and very often adjourned so all parties could have more time before trial. We were very fortunate to have two old scholars, Hugh Woods (HWD 2012 ) and Henry James (DAC 2009) with us who took the boys to a courtroom and explained what happens in a criminal trial, including detailing some of the challenging cases they have had to handle as defence lawyers.
