Our Year 10 students attended a special presentation by Derrick McManus, a former South Australian police officer and STAR group officer who was shot 14 times during a high-risk arrest in 1994. In telling his inspirational story of recovery and resilience, Derrick connected his career experiences with the Year 10 wellbeing curriculum and the adaptability focus of the CARE program.
By the end of this excellent presentation, the students were more able to appreciate how the terms which we cover in our wellbeing program – like adversity, character strength, grit, mindfulness, resilience and a growth mindset – become so important in life, when challenges arise.
