On Tuesday 3 March 2026, our Year 10 Spanish Beginners class enjoyed a fun excursion to San Churro. The group walked together to the venue, taking the opportunity to spend time as a class while engaging with Spanish language and culture beyond the classroom.

At San Churro, students experienced one of the most iconic treats of the Spanish-speaking world: churros con chocolate. Churros are long, ridged strips of fried dough, crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, usually dusted with sugar. They are traditionally served with a thick, rich hot chocolate for dipping.

In Spain and across Latin America, churros are more than simply a dessert. They are part of everyday social life, enjoyed in cafés, at festivals and during family gatherings, often for breakfast or as an afternoon merienda. Sharing churros reflects the strong cultural emphasis on community, conversation and enjoying food together.

Students had the opportunity to order in Spanish, practising key phrases and polite expressions in an authentic setting. Using Spanish in a real-world context helped build their confidence and reinforced the relevance of what they learn in class.

The afternoon was filled with laughter, great food and positive company. Thank you to Mr Michael Barrett for accompanying the excursion and to the team at San Churro for their warm hospitality. Experiences such as this remind us that language learning is not only about grammar and vocabulary, but about culture, connection, shared experiences and yummy food.
