Last week, our Year 2 students took their Service Learning to another level with a hugely successful Plant Sale, combining their love of science with their commitment to caring for our local environment.
Throughout the year, the boys have been learning about and caring for the endangered Southern Purple Spotted Gudgeon, taking responsibility for housing and caring for these special fish in the classroom. Through this experience, students have developed a deeper understanding of the importance of protecting endangered species and preserving our local ecosystems.
As part of Science Week, the Year 2 students extended their learning beyond the classroom by organising a Plant Sale to raise funds for the Glenelg Nature Trust. The boys worked together to prepare and sell plants, with all funds raised being donated to support the Trust’s important work protecting local ecosystems and wildlife.
We are thrilled to acknowledge Dr Sylvia Zukowski, Senior Aquatic Ecologist, who has supported the boys throughout their Southern Purple Spotted Gudgeon project. Sylvia was incredibly grateful for the funds raised and explained how the donation will contribute to restoration and conservation efforts that help protect endangered species and their habitats.
The Plant Sale was a wonderful example of our Year 2 students putting their learning into action. Through Service Learning and Science Week, the boys are discovering that even small actions can make a meaningful difference to our environment and the wildlife that depends on it. We would also like to our parent volunteers who kindly donated their time to assist with the planting process. A special thank you to Bunnings Kent Town for generously supporting our Plant Sale with their kind donations, helping our Year 2 students bring their Service Learning project to life and make a positive difference in our local environment.
