During recent library lessons, Year 2 students have taken a fascinating journey into the past — without leaving the School grounds. As part of their Humanities and Social Sciences curriculum, the boys have been learning about archives and how they help us discover the stories, people and moments that have shaped our School’s history.
With the support of the library team, students have been diving into old photographs, documents and artefacts that reveal the rich heritage of St Peter’s College. A central focus of their inquiry has been learning about their House names — a topic that quickly sparked curiosity and excitement. “Who is Clayton Dyer named after?” one student asked. “Who chose the House colours?” wondered another.
These questions have led to meaningful discussions about the individuals for whom the Houses were named, uncovering the legacies of people who played vital roles in the development of the School. The boys uncovered the names are of past ‘Masters-in-Charge” of the Junior School (then Prep School). The stories of these individuals have helped the boys understand the cultural and social significance of St Peter’s College in the wider community as strengthened their belonging to their House.
This exploration also aligns closely with their classroom studies, where students have been investigating the significant buildings within our School, symbols, local individuals, places and groups to better understand why they are valued. By connecting this broader learning to the familiar setting of their School, the boys have developed a personal connection to the past.
They have enjoyed learning about traditions that began a long time ago and some that still remain today to ones that were part of the past and are no longer. They noticed symbols such as the ‘golden keys’ on past Junior School hats, current blazers and on the buildings.
During this topic we have noticed how engaged the students have become through hands-on experiences with historical materials. “It’s powerful to see how archival learning encourages a sense of identity and belonging, the boys now understand that history is not only in books — it’s all around them.” Through this unit, Year 2 students are not only learning about the past, but also appreciating the lasting impact of the people who came before them.
Their investigations continue to inspire a sense of pride and respect for their School’s traditions, values and community. And perhaps most importantly, they’re discovering that they, too, are part of the ongoing story of St Peter’s College.
