This year, our Year 3 Electives program has proven to be a highlight of the school week, offering students a unique opportunity to mix across all four classes and dive into a wide variety of engaging and creative learning activities each Wednesday afternoon.

Designed to spark curiosity and develop new skills, the electives have taken students on a journey through construction, performance, cooking, science, art, movement, and mindfulness, all while building friendships and confidence along the way.

Mrs Bailey’s Building and Construction group has been hard at work designing and building 3D model houses using pop sticks. The boys have risen to the challenge of creating stable and imaginative structures, showcasing engineering flair and teamwork as they bring their designs to life. In Term 2, Mrs Bailey also leads the exciting Space Club, where students are learning all about our solar system through interactive activities and hands-on learning. From planetary facts to augmented reality model building, every week has launched young minds further into the wonders of space exploration.

Over in Cooking Club and Readers Theatre, Ms Tierney has been guiding students in blending creativity with skill. Budding chefs have been whipping up tasty treats while learning about kitchen safety and food preparation. Meanwhile, the stage has come alive with expressive performances in Readers Theatre, where students develop fluency, confidence, and characterisation through dramatic reading and playful performance. The term will conclude with a performance of Charlotte’s Web, a well-loved story the students explored in depth during our Term 1 novel study. This performance will provide a meaningful opportunity to deepen their understanding of the text through dramatic interpretation, while also building their confidence, collaboration, and communication skills.

In Term 1, Miss Duffy introduced students to the intricate and beautiful world of mosaics. Beginning with paper mosaic art that reflected places of gathering and used First Nations symbols, students connected meaningfully with their HASS learning on community. From there, they crafted vibrant mosaic coasters with glass tiles and grout, and ended the term by decorating mosaic pots, each a personal and colourful creation. Currently, students in Miss Duffy’s group are developing their fine motor skills through crocheting and weaving. This elective has created a wonderfully collaborative atmosphere, with students and teachers alike learning together, sharing techniques, supporting one another, and celebrating milestones as their skills grow.

Ms Medlin’s electives have focused on the whole student, starting in Term 1 with Mindful Movement. Students enjoyed calming yoga sessions with Mr Storer and energetic gym sessions with Jacque. Skipping proved to be a favourite activity, helping students build coordination and teamwork in a fun and active way. In Term 2, the focus turned to strategy and logical thinking in Board Battles, where boys have been learning to play games such as Gobblet and Mancala. These sessions have been filled with lively competition and thoughtful gameplay as students challenge each other and grow their problem-solving abilities.

Our Year 3 Electives program has proven to be a huge success, enriching our students’ learning experiences in fun and meaningful ways.

We can’t wait to see what future Wednesdays will bring next Semester.
