During Week 6, the Year 4 cohort departed for their annual three day venture to Finniss. There was a sense of excitement, energy and zest among the boys as they boarded the bus and departed from School.
After a recess break and play at beautiful Strathalbyn, we were greeted by the Outdoor Education Team at our destination, who showed the boys their ‘home’ for the next few nights. Before setting up tents, we had a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony by local Ngarrindjeri man Cedric.
The next two days embraced the outdoors and nature. From wadli building, lagoon walking and journalling, the Finniss Adventure, Indigenous art, a bush tucker walk and of course free time. A highlight was visiting Goolwa Barrage. Fostering a sense of excitement and adventure through exploration of special natural places, we watched on as some cheeky seals battled for a bathe in the sun.
For many, another highlight was cockling at the water’s edge. A technique, ‘the cockle dance’, was mastered based on the number of cockles collected. To embrace the full experience, we were fortunate to have some pipis prepared by local guide, Elijah, for us to taste. Cooked with a special sauce, the boys lined up for a new and tasty delicacy and experience.
The Year 4 camp was an exciting and immersive outdoor experience that enriched our students to develop valuable life skills while deepening their understanding of indigenous culture and the natural environment. Thank you to the boys for embracing this opportunity and to all the staff who supported this learning journey. Your time and commitment is greatly appreciated.
