Recently, the Year 4 boys walked to St Peter’s Billabong along the River Torrens for a tree planting activity with volunteers from the City of Norwood Payneham and St Peters council. This excursion was a continuation of our learning about habitats and the essential role plants play in a balanced ecosystem.

We enjoyed a short stroll along the River Torrens, before being given a demonstration by council volunteers on how to prepare the grassy woodland landscape for planting. The boys excitedly put on their gardening gloves, collected their trowels, and started digging! Each boy planted at least two seedlings, from a variety of native flora, and helped with some weeding of the area. The Year 4 teachers were incredibly proud of the way the students displayed the school values of truth, respect and service. This was an opportunity for the boys to contribute to the local community, learn from others and to show respect for the natural environment.

Many of the boys are excited to visit their seedlings again and hope to see a thriving ecosystem.

“I am excited to come back to the billabong when I’m old and find the trees we planted!”James Le, Year 4.
