21 November 2025
A very early start on Wednesday 5 November, greeted 12 Junior School cricketers at Adelaide Airport as they embarked on the Year 6 Cricket Tour to Melbourne. Despite the early morning, all the boys were full of excitement and eager to get the tour underway.
The schedule ran from Wednesday to Friday, with matches against Xavier College, St Kevin’s College and Melbourne Grammar School.
Day 1 – Xavier College
Our first match was against Xavier College. We drove straight from the airport to the ground and the boys were ready to go. Despite some wet weather in the preceding days, the facilities at Xavier were outstanding.
We won the toss and elected to bowl, getting off to a great start with some early wickets. However, the Xavier batsmen soon settled and posted a solid total. Facing some excellent bowling, our batsmen found it challenging to build partnerships and the steady fall of wickets saw us fall short of the target.
The boys took away many valuable lessons from this match — both in the field and with the bat — and were keen to put them into practice in the next game.
Day 2 – St Kevin’s College
Day two saw us take on St Kevin’s, traditionally one of our toughest opponents — and this year was no exception. St Kevin’s won the toss and chose to bat.
Our boys started well, with some exceptional fielding that included a direct-hit run-out from the boundary. However, the St Kevin’s batsmen quickly regrouped, producing an attacking and well-constructed innings that set us a big total to chase.
Once again, we began positively with the bat, but another steady loss of wickets made the chase difficult. To the boys’ credit, they batted out the full quota of overs. It was fantastic to see the improvement from the first match and how well the boys implemented what they had learned.
Day 3 – Melbourne Grammar School
The final day of the tour saw us play Melbourne Grammar. There was a great buzz going around pre-game as former Australian Cricket Captain Ricky Ponting was in the stands watching. This game showcased some exceptional cricket from both sides. Melbourne Grammar set a big target for us to chase with some very controlled batting. Our openers got us off to a good start but once again the steady loss of wickets was our Achilles’ heel and we were unable to chase down the runs. Despite not getting the runs, the boys once again managed to bat out all of the overs.
Although the results didn’t go our way this year, the boys learned a great deal about their cricket and showed real commitment to applying those lessons in each match.
All of the boys are to be congratulated on the way they represented St Peter’s College, setting very high standards both on and off the field.
A special thank you to Mr Borgas, Mr Cosgrove and Mr Casey for their time and assistance throughout the tour — your efforts are greatly appreciated.
