A very early started greeted 12 Junior School cricketers at the Adelaide Airport as they embarked on the Year 6 cricket Tour to Melbourne. Despite the early morning all of our boys were very excited to get our tour underway.
The boys had three games organised from Wednesday to Friday. The opposition schools were Caufield Grammar, Melbourne Grammar and St Kevin’s College.
The first match was against Caufield Grammar. We had quite a long drive straight from the airport to reach their Wheelers Hill Campus. Conditions were hot and very windy which were very challenging for the boys. The other challenge for our boys wasthe fact that they were playing against Caufield’s best year 7 team, which was had a number of much bigger players. The boys are to be congratulated on how they attacked this. Luckily, we got through the match just before the big storm hit. After we reviewed the match, the boys took away a lot of learnings which they would work on implementing in the next challenge match against Melbourne Grammar.
Day two saw the boys take on Melbourne Grammar School – Grimwade. We were a little concerned about the wicket due to the storm the day before, but the Melbourne Grammar ground staff had done a fantastic job and the grounds were in perfect condition.
This game show cased some exceptional cricket from both sides with the ascendancy constantly changing. In the end it came down to the last over of the day. St peters, batting second, fell just short by 4 runs. Special mention goes to Asher Brittingham for scoring a fantastic 50 not out. He was well supported by James Nugent. Once again the boys learnt a lot from this game
The final day saw us play St Kevin’s. Due to overnight rain, the venue for the match was changed and the boys were playing on a hard wicket. Our boys fought hard all game, but St Kevins team proved to be far too strong.
Whilst the results didn’t fall our way this year, the boys were able to learn lots about their cricket and it was fantastic to see them trying to implement what they had learned.
All of the boys are to be congratulated on the way that they represented St Peter’s College. The boys set very high standards both on and off the field.
I look forward to seeing the boys continue to learn and develop as well as helping their team mates when they return to their teams to complete term four cricket.
I would like to thank Mr Borgas and Mr Casey for all of their time and help during the tour. Their efforts are greatly appreciated.
