In preparation for the Junior School House Cross Country all students from Years 3 to 6 embarked on a fitness program. This program entailed students performing a 10-minute run at the commencement of each Physical Education lesson. The Years 3 and 4 students extended this fitness training program, after the House Cross Country event, by recording data on laps completed at the end of each week.
Subsequent to the completion of the data collection, the students measured the distance covered, using a trundle wheel. During Health lessons the Years 3 and 4 students, as part of the “Being Physically Active” unit, used Maths concepts – time, calculating distance, estimating, decimals, fractions, analysing data, number facts to interpret the data collected. The students displayed creativity and mathematical thinking in devising ways of presenting the data collected such as charts, graphs, tables, tallies, pictures and written information.
