Years 5 and 6 Annual Concert

On Tuesday 23 June our Years 5 and 6 Cohort (along with a few talented Year 3 and 4 boys) entertained the crowds at their Annual Concert, “Fiesta Latina” – A celebration of Latin music and dance. The boys absolutely dazzled on stage, performing musical items of song and dance. The genre was difficult to learn, but the boys have worked hard throughout Semester 1 in their music classes and ensemble rehearsals to put on a performance that we are all proud of. The excitement, enthusiasm, joy, colour and music amazed the crowd and we are thankful for the support of our parents, staff and the St Peter’s College community.

Year 12 student and Captain of Music Quinn Murphy, attended the Year 5 and Year 6 Annual Concert. Here he reflects on the night as well as his own experience of being part of the SPSC music program.

It was a wonderful experience to return to the Years 5 and 6 Annual Concert on Tuesday evening, six years after my last performance in the Junior School! It’s nights like these that make me feel most privileged not only to be captain of music at SPSC, but most specially part of the community fostered in our music program.

The evening brought back fond memories of performing ‘Eye of the Tiger’ on xylophone, singing 80s hits with the Y5 choir, and sleuthing around on stage like James Bond – but this concert took what I experienced to a whole new level.

The energy and engagement of the boys was lovely to see as they moved between instrumental, choral and dance renditions of famous latin-style pieces, and I had an amazing time grooving in the audience! The outstanding finale of Lionel Ritchie’s All Night Long had me smiling all the way through and into the evening, certainly a performance I won’t forget.

What struck me most was the amount of smiles and dancing around the room – as we grow into moody teenagers, we often become ‘too cool’ to show we’re having fun, and I was so refreshed to see young musicians experiencing genuine joy from their performances.

It was a privilege to reflect on my experience within the music department to the audience, and I couldn’t be more blessed to share my love for music with parents, and most importantly, the students who are the next generation of music at SPSC. I think we’ll need new pairs of sunnies in the music department soon, because the future is looking incredibly bright!
